Our mission is to gather and grow fully mature followers of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through
- Life changing worship
- The Love of God expressed by a family oriented congregation
- The Lordship of Jesus Christ over our time, talents, tithes, and offerings
- Holistic ministries that promote our core values:
- Discipleship, Spirituality, Family, Education, Stewardship, Service, and Evangelism.
Denomination and Affiliation:
We are part of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and our motto is: "God Our Father, Christ Our Redeemer, the Holy Spirit Our Comforter, Humankind Our Family."
The AME Church is Methodist in terms of its basic doctrine and order of worship. Born through adversity, the AME Church (founded in 1816 by Rev. Richard Allen) does not differ in any major way from what all Methodists believe. The split from the main branch of the Methodist Church (founded by John Wesley) was not a result of doctrinal differences, but rather the result of a time period that was marked by racism.
Pastor Ronald Slaughter, a native of Orlando, Florida, and an adopted son of Georgia is currently in his sixth year as Pastor of Saint James AME Church in Newark and South Orange, New Jersey. Pastor Slaughter received his formal education from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia; Turner Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia; and is currently a candidate for the Doctoral Degree at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC with an anticipated graduation date of May 2018. Pastor Slaughter has served four congregations during his 20-year ministerial career. Pastor Slaughter believes by faith that, “The Best in Christ Jesus is Still Yet to Come!”
Our 7:30 and 11:00 AM Sunday worship experiences are approximately ninety minutes each; however, we are subject to the Holy Spirit. Our musical selections contain traditional and contemporary gospel and Christian selections, as well as hymns. The main elements of our service are praise and worship, prayer and the preached Word of God. The sermons are approximately thirty minutes in length.
Our 9:30 Sunday worship experience is held in South Orange, and is a contemporary, multicultural, multi-generational worship experience that is held in the third floor loft ofthe South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC). This worship environment is very relaxed, and you are simply asked to come as you are.

What To Wear (7:30 & 11:00 AM):
Although we do not have a dress code, the most common attire is generally suits, slacks, ties, dress shirts, button downs, and dresses; but, we do have members who feel more comfortable in jeans and T-shirts. During the summer months, we encourage everyone to “dress down.” This affords our pastor, the ministerial staff and everyone else to dress more relaxed.
