Keshia L. Spencer
Youth Pastor, Saint James AME Church
A native of Newark, NJ, Keshia L. Spencer was born, raised, and reared in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). At age 21, Keshia was licensed by the Church of God in Christ as an evangelist/missionary. Here she served wholeheartedly as a preacher, teacher, revivalist, seminarian, and missionary in Newark, across the United States, and even as far as Porte-Au-Prince, Haiti (1996) and Mandeville, Jamaica (2012).
In 2001, Keshia joined Abundant Life Family Worship Church in New Brunswick, NJ under the leadership of Bishop George and Pastor Mary Searight. Here she served on the ministerial staff, member of the praise team and choir, and most of all Keshia was a true worshipper who unashamedly lifted up the Name of the Lord both publicly and privately. Her dedication to ministry and “people” was recognized by her leaders and in June 2013 Keshia was ordained as a reverend by Bishop Searight and from that night on God continues to move mightily in her life and ministry beyond what Keshia could have ever imagined.
While pursuing her Masters of Divinity at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, Keshia came to Saint James AME Church in Newark September 2013 as an intern. As Keshia always says, God literally set her up for a tremendous blessing and as God would have it and with the blessings of her then pastors, Keshia joined Saint James under the capable leadership of Senior Pastor Ronald Slaughter. While serving on the ministerial staff, as an intercessor, and supporter of the vision and visionary at Saint James, Rev. Slaughter appointed Keshia as the youth pastor August 2015. She is currently undergoing the AME ordination process (itinerant track) and every day God proves to Keshia how one step of obedience can open up a floodgate of God’s favor in one’s life and ministry.
Keshia received her BA in English/Secondary Education in 2001 and MA in Mental Health Counseling in 2010 both from Kean University, Union, NJ. She received her Masters of Divinity in 2015 from New Brunswick Theological Seminary and is currently employed at three local colleges as an adjunct professor where she teaches psychology, theology, counseling skills I & II. Keshia published her first book in 2008 entitled, The Rib Speaks: An Anthology of Poems and Short Stories for Men and Women, and she is excited about future publications and all that God has in store for her life and ministry. Keshia’s personal motto is found in Philippians 4:13 and she will continue to pursue God’s purpose knowing that she can and willdo all things through Christ who gives her the strength.
