Mission Statement

Our mission is to gather and grow fully mature followers of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through

  • Life-changing worship
  • The Love of God expressed by a family-oriented congregation
  • The Lordship of Jesus Christ over our time, talents, tithes, and offerings
  • Holistic ministries that promote our core values:
    • Discipleship, Spirituality, Family, Education, Stewardship, Service, and Evangelism

Denomination and Affiliation:

We are part of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and our motto is: “God Our Father, Christ Our Redeemer, the Holy Spirit Our Comforter, Humankind Our Family.”

The AME Church is Methodist in terms of its basic doctrine and order of worship. Born through adversity, the AME Church (founded in 1816 by Rev. Richard Allen) does not differ in any major way from what all Methodists believe. The split from the main branch of the Methodist Church (founded by John Wesley) was not a result of doctrinal differences, but rather the result of a time-period that was marked by racism.

Our Pastor

Pastor Ronald Slaughter, a native of Orlando, FL, an adopted son of Georgia, is now the youngest pastor in history to serve as Senior Pastor of Saint James AME Church in Newark, NJ. On May 7, 2018, Pastor Slaughter earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.

In thirteen years of ministry at Saint James A.M.E. Church, more than 1,600 plus souls have been added to the kingdom; 98% of outstanding debt has been liquidated, nearly a half a million dollars has been invested in facility renovations and upgrades; and over 1.2 million invested in acquiring property around our Newark Campus to enhance our community. Pastor Slaughter along with the great people of Saint James have been working to develop a family-oriented atmosphere, embracing the vision of God, and living out the Vision Statement of “Making Disciples, Building Families, and Meeting Needs.”
